ARTH-SMART – Digital Health Canada Student Challenge (2024)

Our team was awarded 1st place in the 2024 Digital Health Canada Student Challenge for our innovative solution, ARTH-SMART — a digital health platform designed to reduce social isolation and improve arthritis management in seniors. The solution features a wearable smart brace integrated with a mobile app that provides real-time symptom monitoring, personalized therapy recommendations, and community support through peer connection and gamified engagement.

Impact:
The app promotes physical activity, enhances mental health, and empowers seniors to better manage their chronic pain while staying socially connected.

Tools & Themes: Wearable tech, EHR integration, AI-driven personalization, health equity, patient engagement, and senior-centered design.

FHIR Clinical Scenario: Weight Loss and Sleep Problems - OSCE Case

In this team-based FHIR project, we analyzed a clinical case involving a patient with symptoms of hyperthyroidism (e.g., weight loss, insomnia, tremors) and mapped all relevant clinical data to standardized HL7 FHIR resources. We aligned patient encounters, symptoms, investigations (e.g., thyroid function tests), and treatment plans to FHIR elements such as Observation, Condition, DiagnosticReport, and CarePlan.

We also designed an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) and a Workflow Module to illustrate how the resources interact and support data sharing across care teams. This project demonstrates how FHIR can be used to structure and standardize patient data to enable more personalized and interoperable healthcare delivery.

Tools & Themes: HL7 FHIR, Resource Mapping, Clinical Workflow Design, Interoperability, Hyperthyroidism Case Analysis.

BirthBridge – Clinical Decision Support System for Indigenous Maternity Care (2024)

As part of a group project in Knowledge Management & Clinical Decision Making, we developed BirthBridge, a culturally sensitive Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) designed to support Indigenous women throughout pregnancy. The tool integrates clinical best practices with Indigenous knowledge, offering predictive risk detection, remote monitoring, and real-time decision-making through EMR/EHR integration.

The system includes input from Indigenous midwives and community leaders, culturally tailored care plans, and machine learning-based alerts for complications like gestational diabetes and preeclampsia. It aims to close the gap in maternal health disparities caused by systemic barriers, geographic isolation, and lack of culturally appropriate care.

Key Features:

  • Personalized maternity care workflows

  • Real-time tracking and predictive risk alerts

  • Integration with EMRs and telehealth platforms

  • Cultural preference documentation and Indigenous doula involvement

  • Stakeholder engagement strategy for community-led implementation

Themes & Tools: Clinical Decision Support, Health Equity, Indigenous Health, Maternal Mortality Reduction, Workflow Optimization, Stakeholder Mapping, Knowledge Management (SECI Model)
